The War Graves of Ystradgynlais

James Charles Mallows

James Charles Mallows served with the Welsh Regiment on the Western Front and was killed in action in France in September 1918.

The War Memorial erected in the 1970s recorded the name as J Marllows, but this was corrected when the new war memorial was constructed in 2016.

The information on James Charles Mallows has been compiled from a number of sources, including the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, from the Labour Voice newspaper, and the Parish Burial Register (courtesy of the Swansea Archives).

* Note that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records Daisy as Daisy F. Strielog. This is the usual practice based on her name when she died, after remarrying. However, family members inform Ystradgynlais Info that the surname of the man she married after the death of James Charles Mallows was actually Stribey, and not Strielog.

Mr. B. Mallows is the son of James' son, Sidney Mallows.

J Mallows return on home leave in May 1915 was mentioned in the local newspaper, edition of 8th May 1915:-

Private J C Mallows of the Bantam Battalion was home on short leave at Rose Villa last week. He is the first Bantam from Abercrave and looks remarkably well. He has been busy recruiting and has taken seven boys back with him to Colwyn Bay.

James Mallows was one of the fallen of the First World War, mentioned in the Llais (27th September 1919) to be included on the Proposed War Memorial List for Abercrave. He was also listed, with the correct spelling, in the Valley Star article of 1978 about the creation of a war memorial for Ystradgynlais.
