Ystradgynlais - WW1 Fallen
The War Graves information on this website begins with the War Memorial in Ystradgynlais, and then is categorised by the churchyards and cemeteries in which the fallen are either buried, or remembered. Coverage then extends to memorials and plaques of remembrance in the local area, including those in chapels, welfare halls and parks.
The new war memorial and plaques inaugurated in 2016 include names that were not on the original war memorial, from the 1970s. Any still listed as "Not on Memorial" below, have been discovered since this date.
The names below are taken from the Ystradgynlais War Memorial, and are classified according to the town or village which is listed upon it. Clicking on any name will take you to the page for that individual where you will be able to view details on him, view his grave, or remembrance grave, and sometimes see the photograph as appeared in the newspaper at the time of his death.

WW1 ARMISTICE CENTENARY PROJECT
To pay our respects to the fallen of Ystradgynlais, Cwmtwrch and Colbren, we have made over 100 poppies and each one holds the name of one of those men who gave all for God, King and Country.
We have placed the YEARGroup poppy cascade as part of the WW1 Remembrance display 'Their Name Liveth For Evermore' in Ystradgynlais Library. We have matched individual poppies to the photographs put up by the library on their background display. The cascade sits among books on the history of the First World War, as well as some detailed biographies of the fallen compiled by the library.
VALLEY BOYS IN THE GREAT WAR
We are pleased to present our First World War project as a contribution to the Centenary of WWI
It is a document entitled: YSTALYFERA YSTRADGYNLAIS And DISTRICT 1914 -1918.
It tells of some of the things which occurred throughout those years but unlike the Fallen of the Tawe Valley, these men and women, thankfully returned home. The information has been compiled from articles printed in the Llais newspaper, with one or two references from The Cambrian Daily Leader, over the period of four years, with 1919 included where appropriate. The document has been divided into chapters, e.g. Furlough, Wounded, Recruits etc. The layout follows a diary format, although when a serviceman/woman is frequently mentioned they have been brought together under the main chapter heading, so as to keep their continuity.

The Long Sleep
Does anyone know you are there?
The chapel's gone, the ground is bare.
A tangled web of thorns and weeds
Hides your grave, your name and deeds.
But you were once, one of them
Who crossed the sea, with countless men,
Eager to fight and defend this land
Ignoring the toll, war would demand.
Until that hour and wounded you lay.
Waiting for help, as night turned to day.
Your mother's sweet face, above in the sky,
With pain in her eyes, as if asking, Why?
For all around you, the bodies were still
Yet the moans and the screams, echoed at will
She sent you a prayer, her tears fell as rain
Goodbye my dear son, no longer in pain.
Surely the hour comes, that we should all dread,
When he shall judge both the quick and the dead.
You gave your all, we neglect your grave,
How soon, Man forgets, the Deeds of the Brave.

The poem above was inspired by cutting away undergrowth to find the grave of David John Samuel, at Carmel cemetery, Abercrave. He died 17th July 1918, aged 24 years old.
