The Golden Lion, Lower Cwmtwrch

The Golden Lion public house in Lower Cwmtwrch is on the road that leads to the bridge over the river and up to Rhiwfawr.

In the photograph, the building of houses on the right with the fancy brickwork is Golden Lion Terrace, and is where the pub was.

The South Wales Voice 24th December 1949 records the death of Mr Tom Thomas of Golden Lion, Cwmtwrch:-


The funeral of Mr Tom Thomas, Golden Lion, Cwmtwrch, took place at Cwmllynfell Cemetery, Revs W.P. Thomas and J.R. Hughes officiating.
The mourners at the funeral were: David William, Dl. John, Brynmor, brothers' Elwyn, Islwyn, Thomas, Byron, Rhodi, Wynford, Alun and T. Morgans, nephews; Mr Edward Thomas and Mr John Jones, uncles; William and Iorwerth Jones, S. Thomas, Rayner, David, John Gwynfor, Ieuan and Tom Ellis Thomas, D.R. Jones, Glyn Thomas, Emrys Phillips, Gomer Jones, David, John and Charles Williams, John Watkins, David Jones, Gethin Roberts, Harry Davies, Tom Ellis Thomas, David Alexander, Dl. John and Wyndham Roderick, R. Price, William Jones, Edward Jones.

Some of the details about pubs in the Swansea Valley and Coelbren were sourced from 'The Village Pub' by William T. Davies,a detailed history of brewing in the Neath and Swansea valleys and the history and heritage of the local pubs of the area. All proceeds from sale of this book go towards Ystradgynlais Community Hospital.
