Changes to Gorsedd Park, Ystradgynlais

During the 2010s there have been several changes to Gorsedd Park, Ystradgynlais, most of which could be viewed as part of an ongoing evolution of the park that in the past has included the erection of the peace memorial and the plaque for the parachute regiment.

Recent changes have included new trees on the far side of the Gorsedd Stones, towards the church hall; a bench with a memorial plaque to the much-loved Doctor Boladz; the opening up of the gateway into the park; and the new War Memorial constructed in 2016.

A view across the Gorsedd Stones before the planting of the new trees. This photograph was used in one of the postcards produced by Ystradgynlais Volunteer Centre in 2011.   Shortly afterwards, the new trees were planted, initially surrounded by protective material. This photograph across the Gorsedd Stones dates to Summer 2016.

The gateway to Gorsedd Park before the 2016 changes. It had two gateways, and in between on the left-hand side was a commemorative plaque celebrating the official opening of the park.   In 2016, to facilitate access to the new War Memorial, the gateway was partially demolished and opened up. The commemorative plaque will now be set in the outer wall of the park.

Remembering The Fallen
The war graves and remembrance graves of Ystradgynlais and of Ystalyfera form an important part of local history, and on separate domains we have established websites dedicated to preserving the memory of those who fell in the world wars. These websites also index local cemeteries, memorials and monuments, as well as include many excerpts from the Llais newspaper, archived at Ystradgynlais Library.
