History of Ynyscedwyn Primary School, Ystradgynlais

Class photographs form an important photographic record of any school. Below we reproduce several of these from the 1930s.

Below is a photograph of the youngest class of Ynyscedwyn Infant School, 1931, at the time called 'Babies' but probably equating to modern-day Reception classification, although memoirs from the 1920s and 1930s make it clear that village schools often took in children at 3 years of age if the parents wanted it, so it could be seen as a combined Nursery and Reception class.

Below is another class photograph from 1931, showing older children, from the girl holding the board we can see it was listed as "Standard 3"

From The Llais

The Llais newspaper always covered the local schools, alongside the churches and chapels, district councils, police courts, sports teams, and obituaries.

From the South Wales Voice 29th November 1947:-

Good Deed - Last week the headmaster of Ynyscedwyn Mixed School received a congratulatory letter from the medical superintendent of Craig-y-Nos Hospital thanking the staff and scholars for their donation of £7 10s. towards the children's Christmas fund.

Also from the South Wales Voice 29th November 1947 came the announcement of a new teacher joining the school:-

Scholastic Appointment - Mr Samuel Morgan, a native of Abercrave, has joined the staff of the Yniscedwyn Mixed School. He was employed previously as a certificated teacher by the Birmingham L.E.A.
